The 8 Moon Phases Explained: Science, Symbolism and Meaning

Every month the moon puts on the same quiet show. It disappears, returns as a thin silver curve, grows into a bright full circle and slowly fades again. This cycle takes about 29.5 days, and people have used it to mark time, plant crops and tell stories for thousands of years. Here is what happens in each of the eight phases, both in the sky and in the symbolism that has grown around it.

Why the moon has phases

The moon is always half lit by the sun. As it orbits Earth, we see different amounts of that lit half. When the moon is between us and the sun, the bright side faces away and the moon looks dark. When Earth is between the moon and the sun, the bright side faces us and we see a full disc. The phases are simply the in-between views.

1. New Moon 🌑

The moon rises and sets with the sun and is almost invisible. Astronomers love this time because the night sky is at its darkest. Symbolically, the New Moon stands for beginnings, seeds and intentions: a blank page.

2. Waxing Crescent 🌒

A thin curve appears in the western sky after sunset. “Waxing” means growing. This phase is linked with hope, motivation and taking the first small step towards something new.

3. First Quarter 🌓

Half of the moon’s face is lit, and it is high in the sky at sunset. The name refers to the moon being a quarter of the way through its orbit. Its meaning is action and decision: the moment to commit or push through an obstacle.

4. Waxing Gibbous 🌔

More than half is lit and the moon grows fuller each night. “Gibbous” comes from a word meaning humped. This is a phase of refining, patience and preparing for results.

5. Full Moon 🌕

The whole face shines, rising at sunset and setting at sunrise. It is the brightest night of the cycle and the phase most tied to emotion, celebration, clarity and connection.

6. Waning Gibbous 🌖

The light begins to shrink and the moon rises later each evening. Traditions connect this phase with gratitude, generosity and sharing what you have learned.

7. Last Quarter 🌗

Again half lit, but the opposite half from the First Quarter. It is often visible in the morning sky. Symbolically it is about release: letting go of habits, grudges or plans that no longer serve you.

8. Waning Crescent 🌘

A thin curve rises just before dawn. It is the quiet end of the cycle, associated with rest, healing and reflection before the next New Moon.
